Experiencing the Traditional Weapon Sumpit in Pampang Cultural Village

Pampang Cultural Village once again attracted visitors and cultural participants by offering a unique experience of trying the traditional Dayak weapon, sumpit. The activity took place on Sunday, August 3, 2025, as part of a cultural visit aimed at introducing local heritage to an international audience.

The program opened with a speech by Esrom Palan, the Traditional Chief of Pampang Cultural Village, who welcomed the participants in the backyard of his residence. In his remarks, he emphasized the importance of preserving Dayak traditions as an identity to be safeguarded and passed on to future generations.

Afterwards, Yuvensius Darmansius, Head of the Enggang Borneo Community in East Kalimantan, together with his members, guided the participants in trying the sumpit. Participants first gathered at the back terrace before moving to the yard, where they took turns practicing. The highlight came when a friendly competition was held among the male participants to test their accuracy. The winner was Abdul Aziz Agbo from Ghana, who successfully hit the target with remarkable precision.

The event continued with an impressive demonstration from the Enggang Borneo members, who showcased their expertise by using the sumpit from a distance of 20 to 25 meters, leaving the audience in awe of their skill.

This cultural experience offered participants a deeper understanding that tradition is not merely a relic of the past, but a living practice that remains meaningful in the lives of local communities today.
