Uncovering the Cultural Heritage of Indonesia’s Oldest Kingdom: A Journey in Tenggarong, Kutai Kartanegara

On Saturday, July 20, 2024, the summer school participants undertook a field trip to one of the historical cities located in East Kalimantan, to explore the culture in Kutai Kartanegara. The participants visited the city of Tenggarong.

The trip started with a visit to the Mulawarman Museum, which has lots of historical treasures from the Kutai Kartanegara Sultanate.The museum offers an excellent opportunity to gain insight into the history and culture of Kutai, which is one of Indonesia’s oldest kingdoms. 

While exploring the museum, participants learned about the history of the sultanate and also the ethnography. Participants visited the entire museum and saw an impressive range of artifacts, including statues, inscriptions, royal crowns, traditional tools, and centuries-old ceramics from various countries.

By exploring the antiques in the museum’s collection, participants were able to gain insight into the historical and cultural significance of the artifacts. This can foster a deeper appreciation of the importance of preserving cultural heritage. By visiting the museum, participants can also learn interesting perspectives on the lifestyle and cultural practices of the Kutai people in the past.

After visiting the museum, the trip continues to the Traditional Music Festival in Tenggarong. The festival is a great opportunity to see a wide variety of traditional musical instruments from all over Indonesia. Through this exhibition, participants had the opportunity to gain insight into the techniques of playing various traditional musical instruments. Participants also had the opportunity to play various traditional musical instruments directly

The experience offers insight into the distinctive characteristics of each musical instrument, while also providing an opportunity to cultivate an interest in Indonesian traditional music. This presents a valuable chance to showcase and spread awareness of Indonesian culture.  

After exploring the museum and enjoying the traditional music exhibition, the trip continued to Ladaya, which is known for its exciting outdoor activities. During there, participants can engage in a variety of adventurous activities, including playing paintball. This war game uses air guns and paintballs, and is played in teams. This activity is not only physically challenging, but also fosters teamwork and strategic thinking.

To finish the tour, the bus stopped at the Kutai Kartanegara Bridge, one of the most famous landmarks in Tenggarong. The Kutai Kartanegara Bridge crosses over the Mahakam river, connecting the route to Samarinda. With stunning natural panoramas, participants can relax while enjoying the mesmerizing sunset.
